Within twenty minutes, the opening citrus fades into a dense floral heart of rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, and orange blossom. Over the next two hours, the powdery floral sweetness gradually recedes as dark base notes take command. Although Evyan originally marketed Menace to women in 1943, modern tastes have shifted significantly. The prominent inclusion of dry oakmoss, earthy patchouli, and raw civet gives the base a rugged, mossy profile very similar to classic mid-century masculine chypres. While White Shoulders is a polite, romantic white floral centered on sweet lilac, gardenia, and clean innocence, Menace is its dark, provocative sibling. Menace trades the gentle floral sweetness for a heavy dose of animalic civet, bitter oakmoss, and dark patchouli. Where White Shoulders feels bridal and airy, Menace is moody, dramatic, and distinctly nocturnal.

Because Menace has been discontinued for decades, bottles command collector prices on secondary auction sites. A sealed mini or well-kept bottle offers solid value for vintage enthusiasts due to the high concentration of real oakmoss and legacy oils that cannot be legally formulated today. For casual buyers seeking modern bargains, however, it remains an expensive novelty.

Menace has such a complex, dominant chypre structure that it easily overpowers most scents. However, if you want to soften its sharp vintage edge, you can layer it with a simple, modern single-note vanilla or a light sandalwood base oil.
