Semi-Bespoke No. 23 is one of the more distinctive woody ambers in Roja Dove's orbit. On paper it looks dense, and on skin it largely delivers that way, but the structure is not just heavy resin piled on top of wood. The opening has a clear green, aromatic lift from oregano, thyme and basil, sharpened by bergamot, which gives the first few minutes a brisk herbal edge before the base materials begin to dominate.

The heart of the fragrance is where its character settles in. Frankincense and labdanum seem to do most of the heavy lifting, creating a thick, resinous amber effect that feels warm, slightly leathery and almost sun-baked. Geranium and rock rose stop it from becoming flat, but this is not a floral fragrance in any meaningful way. It is much more about dry herbs, glowing resins and a woody structure that feels grounded and composed.

As it develops, sandalwood softens the sharper edges and brings in a creamier texture. Vanilla becomes easier to notice later, but it does not turn the scent sugary. Instead, it rounds out the labdanum and incense, giving the dry-down a smoother and more comfortable feel. Several wearer impressions point to that later stage as the best part of the fragrance, especially if you like amber that feels warm, natural and slightly powdery rather than glossy or loud.

What stands out most is the balance between aromatic freshness and resinous depth. The herbs keep the scent from collapsing into a generic amber blur, while the base keeps it serious and substantial. At the same time, this is not a fragrance that seems obsessed with dramatic transformation. It moves in a steady line from herbal spice to incense amber to creamy woods, which may either feel reassuringly coherent or a little too linear depending on what you want.

In wear, Semi-Bespoke No. 23 seems best suited to cooler weather, especially autumn and winter. The warmth of labdanum, frankincense, clove and woods gives it a comforting, wrapped-in-resin quality that makes much more sense in cold air than in heat. It also tends to read more masculine than fully neutral, despite being marketed for both women and men. That is less about any single note and more about the overall texture, dry, earthy, aromatic and quietly stern.

This is also the kind of Roja that really depends on your taste for labdanum. If you enjoy amber with a chewy, resinous centre and a natural herbal top, it can feel calm, elegant and deeply satisfying. If you want something brighter, more transparent or more obviously evolving, it may come across as too dense or a little slow to fully reveal itself. The quality of the dry-down is a major selling point, but it is still a fragrance to sample before committing, especially given the price bracket.
