This is a rich, resinous oriental fragrance. It opens with sharp galbanum and bitter artemisia before settling into a dense heart of tobacco, iris, and various florals. The base is where the fragrance truly shines, featuring heavy doses of castoreum, civet, incense, and leather that provide a dark, animalic depth.

Yes, it is quite dynamic. The opening is very green and slightly sour thanks to the fig leaf and galbanum. As it wears over several hours, the green notes fade into a powdery, floral heart, finally resting in a long, leathery, and animalic base that feels much darker than the initial spray.

It is exceptionally long-lasting. On most skin types, expect it to remain present for 10 to 12 hours. Because of the heavy base of tolu balsam, benzoin, and castoreum, it is common to still detect it on clothing or skin well into the next morning after an evening wear.

It has strong to enormous projection for the first three hours. It creates a significant scent bubble that fills a room, making it noticeable to others from several feet away. It eventually pulls closer to the body as the resins and cacao pod settle, but it remains potent throughout the day.

This fragrance is best reserved for cold autumn and winter weather. Its dense, resinous profile of incense, myrrh, and leather can become overwhelming in high heat. In freezing temperatures, however, the warmth of the tonka bean and ambergris creates a cozy, protective shield that feels appropriate for the climate.

It is generally not recommended for the office. Because of the strong civet, castoreum, and incense notes, it can be quite polarizing and aggressive in confined professional spaces. It is much better suited for evening events, formal dinners, or private occasions where you prefer to make a bold, dark statement.

It is distinctly unisex. While the floral heart featuring ylang-ylang, iris, and violet has a softer, powdery side, the rugged base of oakmoss, tobacco, and castoreum grounds it thoroughly. It fits anyone who enjoys challenging, vintage-style compositions that do not adhere to modern sweet or fresh fragrance trends.

Layering is difficult due to the complexity and strength of the notes. If you must, try layering it with a very simple, high-quality vanilla or cedarwood fragrance to smooth out the sharp opening of galbanum or the animalic bite of civet, though it is usually best experienced on its own.

It captures the spirit of classic 20th-century perfumery using heavy animalic and resinous accords. If you enjoy the complexity of older Guerlain or Caron extraits but want something more aggressive, this is a strong contender. It lacks the modern sweet, sugary notes found in most designer fragrances today.

This is a risky blind buy. The inclusion of heavy animalics like castoreum and civet means it can be challenging for those used to mass-market scents. Always sample this first to ensure your skin chemistry reacts well to the dense base of leather and oakmoss before committing to a full bottle.
