I sprayed The Palace by Jazeel on my left wrist on a chilly 45-degree November afternoon. The opening hit fast with a bold surge of aromatic bay leaf and sour lemon juice, cut by green bergamot and a warm crackle of crushed cardamom. There is no soft introductory period here. Orange blossom tries to smooth the edges, but the top notes feel deliberately herbal, sharp, and unapologetic. It immediately signals classic mid-twentieth-century chypre construction rather than modern synthetic sweetness.

After fifteen minutes on skin, the intense bay leaf recedes into the background to reveal a rich floral heart. Bulgarian rose leads the mid phase alongside dense ylang-ylang and jasmine. What keeps this floral stage interesting is a subtle marshmallow accord hiding underneath. It does not turn the fragrance into a bakery gourmand. Instead, the marshmallow acts like a powdery cushion, taking off the bitter sting of the top notes and allowing the rose to feel velvety on warm skin.

As the heart settles into the third hour, the dry down takes full control. Cypress and oakmoss dominate the middle layer with a deep, earthy green texture. Bitter labdanum and smoky agarwood emerge alongside dry cedar, sandalwood, and a dust of cinnamon. Orris root adds a cool iris texture that keeps the woods from feeling overly heavy or medicinal. The agarwood used here leans woody and dry rather than barnyard, anchoring the vetiver and incense with clean, dark structure.

Performance is undeniably massive. Two sprays on skin yielded over twelve hours of total wear time, pushing past the fourteen-hour mark on my wool coat collar. Projection remains powerful for four hours, throwing an arm's length bubble of bay leaf, oakmoss, and incense before pulling into a dense two-foot scent trail. This is strictly a cold-weather fragrance. Wearing it in temperatures above sixty degrees would overwhelm anyone in a closed room, but on crisp autumn nights or frozen winter evenings, it commands attention effortlessly.

The Palace is not built for beginners looking for an easy everyday office scent. It targets seasoned collectors who appreciate the dry, structured complexity of vintage perfumery like Roja Diaghilev or Guerlain Mitsouko. If your collection leans heavily toward sugary vanilla or light aquatic citrus, this heavy chypre profile will likely shock your nose. However, for wearers who love green oakmoss, dark woods, and resinous depth, it offers serious craftsmanship.

My only real reservation is the price tag relative to its limited wearability. Because it demands cold weather and formal attire, you will rarely reach for it during casual weekend errands. That said, if you sample first and fall for its dark oakmoss and bay leaf dry down, a single bottle will cover your winter evening rotation for years.
