Shiseido Basala hits the skin with a sharp, bracing rush of green rosemary, clary sage, and bitter artemisia. It is a dry, red-hued chypre from the early nineties that completely bypasses the clean, aquatic trends of its era. As the initial herbal blast simmers down, a warm wave of cinnamon and carnation emerges, bringing a dusty, fire-warmed depth. The base settles into a heavy, mossy leather anchored by patchouli and labdanum, creating a comforting masculine shield. This is a complex scent for cold autumn nights and formal wool coats. It is a bottle worth hunting down for collectors who value bold, mossy chypres with a distinct Japanese aesthetic of structured restraint. Show less
