Jean Bouvaist launched Chypre in 1953 as a traditional French chypre composition for women. The perfume opens with sharp bergamot citrus that immediately cuts through the air. As the top notes settle, a rich floral heart of jasmine and rose emerges over a dry, mossy base. Oakmoss and labdanum dominate the dry down, giving the scent a dark, earthy foundation anchored by patchouli and subtle leather notes. It wears close to the skin after the first hour, creating a muted, autumnal warmth that feels quiet and austere. Because this mid-century formula is discontinued, surviving vintage bottles offer a rare look at mid-century oakmoss extraction before modern ingredient regulations changed the chypre family.
